Internship Info & Application
Maveric Heritage Ranch Co. was established to promote
& preserve endangered breeds of livestock. We accomplish
this through diligent breeding programs including genetic
mapping and research, production & marketing. We
are a grass-based Sustainable Farming facility, practicing
Multi-species Management Intensive grazing. Although
we raise a multitude of species, our specialty is endangered
swine breeds. This is an ever changing, ever growing
ranch, and we are constantly evaluating new & better
ways to produce healthy livestock, foods and lifestyles,
and enhance the beauty of our environment.

General Internship/Apprenticeship Information:
Important: Smokers, tobacco or recreational drug
users not accepted.
Duration of Internship: Interns agree to participate
in the internship program for a minimum of 3 months
(12 weeks) after a 2 week trial period. Interns must
provide a 2 week notice before terminating the internship.
In addition, Interns accept that vacation time is not
typically permitted during the 3 month internship.
Work/Experience Desired: Since the intent of the internship
is to pass along knowledge, we do not have specific
experience requirements. We do give preference to those
with a farming/agriculture, animal husbandry or organic
production background or those pursuing that career/lifestyle.
Applicants must be highly motivated, independent workers
in good physical condition (able to lift 50lbs.), have
a sincere desire to learn about sustainable farming
& endangered livestock breeds. This is a hands on
internship-you will get dirty every day!
Interns can expect to:
· Handle & feed livestock daily and keep
daily records
· Engage in hard work and physical activity regardless
of weather
· Engage in construction projects of all kinds
· Study and apply sustainable, organic, traditional
and alternative farming and ranching practices
· Participate in breeding, birthing and regular
checkups on livestock and maintain records of progress
· Repair/build fences, corrals, pens, barns or
other livestock facilities as needed
Upkeep and maintenance of your personal space is the
responsibility of the intern.
All interns will be required to understand & sign
a confidentiality agreement to protect the proprietary
methods used at Maveric.
Interns are responsible to carry their own health insurance
and are responsible for their own medical expenses.
Evidence of health coverage and a current tetanus vaccine
are required prior to starting an internship.
Add'l desirable traits: fluency in English, valid driver's
license, ability to operate tractors and other heavy
equipment, basic carpentry skills, computer skills,
willingness to learn new skills.

Stipend/Compensation: $500 per month plus room and meals.
Any tax liability incurred is the responsibility of
the intern. Stipend may be increased after 3, 6 &
9 months. Interns are responsible for their own transportation
unless prior arrangements have been made.
Interns accept full responsibility for obtaining the
proper permission/requirements from their home institution
if they intend to earn higher education credits for
the internship.
Schedule: Interns are expected to work 5 ½ days
per week (approximately 45-60 hours). Hours vary according
to the work load and weather.
Interns are expected to supply their own work boots,
clothing, sunscreen, insect repellant, eye protection
and gloves, and take appropriate precautions to work
safely.
Interns must have their own health insurance coverage,
and proof of coverage will be required. Maveric Heritage
Ranch does not assume responsibility for any medical
expenses of the intern. Additionally, we are not required
to provide Worker's Compensation insurance.
Housing: Private bedroom in shared farm house or guest
cottage, private or shared bath depending on number
of interns on site, shared living room, kitchen, laundry
facilities.
We cannot provide housing for pets, children or overnight
guests.
Meals: Community lunch & evening supper, groceries
provided for self made breakfast. Help with meal prep
& cleanup greatly encouraged!
Additional Details:
We are looking for highly motivated & committed
interns to assist in the daily & ever changing needs
of the ranch. This is a great opportunity to learn ranching/farming
methods that benefit people, animals, plants & the
environment. Long term internship may lead to full time
permanent employment & partnership potential.

WAIVER AND RELEASE
OF LIABILITY
For and in consideration of the internship in which
I have chosen to participate, I, on behalf of myself,
my heirs, executors, trustees, personal representatives,
wards and assigns, as applicable, do hereby fully and
without any reservation of any kind whatsoever, waive,
release and hold blameless Maveric Heritage Ranch Co.
and its officers, directors, agents, and employees,
for any personal injury or death that I may suffer,
whether by omission, commission, or negligence (INCLUDING,
TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, INSTANCES OF RECKLESSNESS
OR WHERE STRICT LIABILITY OF THE RANCH MAY APPLY) of
Maveric Heritage Ranch Co.
In making this full, final and unequivocal release,
I hereby acknowledge that the premises where the internship
is occurring contains agriculture equipment and fixtures
that may constitute a hazardous area and can result
in serious personal injury or death resulting from the
use thereof, including, without limitation, collapse,
falling objects, leaks, spills, tripping, slipping,
falling down and other foreseen or unforeseen, known
or unknown, apparent or hidden perils, hazards and conditions
existing on these premises.
Notwithstanding each and every such risk, peril, hazard
and condition which may now or hereafter exist on the
premises, I hereby acknowledge and appreciate the existence
of all of such matters and hereby fully and unequivocally
assume any and all such risks of personal injury or
death to myself directly or indirectly associated therewith.
I acknowledge and agree that my agreement to the terms
hereof is a material inducement and a condition precedent
to the granting of permission by Maveric Heritage Ranch
Co. To the fullest extent permitted by laws and regulations,
I, on behalf of myself, my heirs, executors, trustees,
personal representatives wards and assigns, as
applicable, shall defend, indemnify, and hold harmless
Maveric Heritage Ranch Co, its officers, directors,
agents, and employees from and against all claims, damages,
losses, court costs and expenses, direct or indirect,
including negligence (including but not limited to fees
and charges of physicians, attorneys, and other professionals)
and medical expenses relating to any personal injury
or death suffered directly or indirectly by me during
my participation.
The parties agree that to the extent the written terms
of this release conflict with South Dakota State laws,
statutes, or public policy, the written terms of this
Release shall be deemed by any court of competent jurisdiction
to be modified in the most limited extent possible and
in such a manner as to be in full and complete compliance
with all such laws, statutes, or public policy, and
to not contain any unenforceable, or prohibited term
or terms, such that this Release shall be fully enforceable
in accordance with and to the greatest extent permitted
by South Dakota Law.
