Belted Galloway Cattle

Belted Galloway Cattle are amazing creatures. They look like giant oreo cookies or panda bears. They have a shaggy long coat that serves several purposes. The coat protects the cattle from biting insects and sunburn during summer, & provides heavy insulation from the cold & snow in winter. This thermal protection has an added benefit-the cattle do not develop an abundance of body fat against the cold, keeping the meat lean and lower in calories.

Galloways originated in Scotland from ancient Celtic breeds, & were first imported to America (New York) in 1939. There are approximately 7000 Belted Galloways in the U.S. now. “Belties” come in three colors ~black, red & dun (taupe). Belties are also “polled”, i.e. they naturally don’t have horns! A mature Galloway bull typically weighs 1800-2000#, and a cow averages 800-1100#.

An added bonus of the Belties is their docile personalities. They are easily trained to halter & enjoy a good scratching. The cows make excellent mothers-making our job all that much easier. These cattle excel on pasture and are hardy foragers. Belted Galloways are fun to raise, and make an impressive herd.
