Jacob Sheep
Jacob Sheep are considered one of the oldest breeds of sheep known to man, and are likely the spotted sheep referenced in the story of Jacob (Genesis 30) in the Bible. Documented history places Jacobs in Syria over three thousand years ago. Jacobs appear to be a white sheep with black or lavender spots. In fact, they are a black sheep with white markings! The lavender ones carry a “dilution” gene-making the black appear lighter-usually a cross between grey and brown. The most remarkable aspect of Jacobs is their horns. They can have from 2 to 6 horns (including odd numbers and mismatched sets). The horns on a ram can grow several feet long. Jacobs are listed as a rare breed by the American Livestock Breeders Conservancy. This means that there are less than 5000 Jacobs in the global population. We are blessed with nearly 40 Jacobs here at Maveric. Jacobs produce fine flavored and textured meat, light in taste, lean and very tender. The fleece is soft, open and light in grease, making it highly desirable to hand spinners. Jacobs also make wonderful pets. If you are interested in raising this wonderful breed, please email or call today for more information and availability. Breeding stock available most of the year. Shipping or transport can be arranged by Maveric Heritage Ranch Co. All costs associated with shipping, health certificates, veterinary inspections and shipping crates are the responsibility of the purchaser. |
